Default Lifters

I have a stock 883 with 30,000 miles,
if you were replacing the lifters what would you use?
I have heard Chevrolet LT1 lifters are some of the best.
S&S are also highly recommended..

My budget so far is $300,00 and the local bike shop charges $85.00 an hour,

Wish I had a budget of $2,000.00 but if I overshoot the $300,00 I do have a credit card to help distribute the pain and a few items I might be able to sell.

Just curious, why are you replacing the lifters?

I use S&S premium. They work great.

I replaced mine because one of them stopped pumping up. Aaron at Hammer highly recommends S&S premium. lifters. That's good enough for me. And I will say they have been the quietist lifters I have ever used.

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/sport...vs-harley.html

I've got 90k on my bike now, the last 55k with Chevy lifters in them. I've torn apart many different kinds of lifters to see the inner workings. Turns out a lot of them are for the most part identical except for the price. The major difference between makers is that they alter the piddle valve design. Not uncommon and even HD has changed it 2 or 3 times over the years themselves.

That S&S video is pure propaganda. They make great parts and their lifters are awesome stuff, but that claim is just crap. My bike would long be dead if that had any veracity. I remember one time I had it torn apart, can't remember if it was for the 1250 or base gaskets or something, but they got all drained down, no oil in the top end. Dumped some oil in the top as usual along with some assembly lube. Start the bike up with empty lifters and no oil in the pushrods: 30s later got oil pressure in the top end.

If anyone wants to donate an S&S lifter, I'd gladly tear it apart and measure it/show all the parts and how it compares. I've got even better measuring equipment these days. I just never want to drop the cash for a whole set just to measure.

With your budget, S&S lifters wouldn't even leave money leftover for install.

Any reason why you won't do it yourself? It's a long process but not difficult. I did that not too long ago and it was a great learning experience.

And since he's back, I will enlist cvaria to look over your shoulder and guide you.

Intake: Front, Top (Rocker) tapping.
Paying the local shop to start at the top of the front cylinder and find out what is tapping.
Then, trouble shooting to assure we eliminate the issue.
This may mean all four lifters will be replaced.
It may mean the cams will need to be replaced.
It can mean a lot of things, this is why I am letting my Local Motorcycle Repair shop do the work.
They have already been through the learning curve and will not misread the clues and should resolve the issue the first time.

I am running on trust and reputation.
I am also running on hope and fear.
Money is so tight that it may take me a year to recover from the economic shock, but better now then to wait until something breaks 300 miles from home,
Retirement is not easy when you have to sell one item to fix another. I may end up selling several items, but really want the assurance that goes with a knowledgeable inspection.

I am blessed to have great credit and a credit card to absorb this adventure, till I can sell some things to clear the debt.
