We installed a new Mustang seat with driver backrest on my wife's 1200L. The backrest doesn't quite adjust forward enough for her to actually rest comfortable against it and reach the bars. She needs about another 2" or so. I was wondering if it would be best to add some pullback risers or to switch out her bars to something with more pullback. The Harley dealership here said to add 4" risers with 2" pullback they had in stock, they would have to replace the speedometer housing with pieces from different bikes from different years. I don't see what risers have to do with the speedometer housing, but that's what they said they had to do when they added the risers to a Sportster not too long ago. This is coming from one of the mechanics. My wife actually likes the height her bars are at now so a short rise with a couple inches pullback would be ideal. However, it isn't necessary as long the new height isn't drastic from what it is now. What would you guys recommend? If you think switching the bars would be best, which bars do you recommend? If you think risers would be the best option, which risers do you suggest? Also, if anyone knows the height and pullback of the stock bars on a 1200 Low, could you please tell me what it is?
If you want to change the stock riser and bar to pull back, a new speedo bracket set up is needed. Why? Look at your 1200L, the speedo bracket is mounted on 1 inch risers, the speedo sits on top at a 45 degree angle. If you plan to install a pull back risers using the same bracket, I assume the speedo face will sit 90 degree, it makes it hard to read and looks ugly. I am not sure what type of pull back riser you want to buy, if you want to go for the 04-07 Sportster Custom HD pull back, please also get the speedo/top clamp, the mounting offset on that one is different from any other HD, otherwise it will not work.
I made some mods to my wife's 071200L to get the bars closer for her. She's just over 5ft tall. We added a set of mini-apes which required new brake clutch and throttle cables, we had the dealer install the new bars. It still wasn't ok so wethen added a set of straight risers that were about 2" longer than the standard. I was concerned about the speedometer but was told by a couple of people on the forum that it would be ok. It was, no changes necessary for the speedometer, and the whole thing took about 10 minutes to do. This seemed to help, and she's happy with the barsnow.
128auto, are you saying to get the speedo/top clamp that comes on a Custom?
tiger_rider, The picture would be very helpful. It sounds like our wives are about the same height. The picture would allow my wife to see how that setup looks and she can decided if that's the route she wants to go.
Tiger,
The thumbnail shows an error. Would you mind posting the picture again please? I talked to my wife about possibly going to some mini apes and she might be open to the idea depending on how it looks.
Yes, if you want to use the 04-07 Stock pullback riser, you will have to get the matching speedo/top clamp because of the mounting offset.

Thanks 128auto. I imagine the same thing wouldapplytoany set of risers, right? Or does that top clamp only work with the 04-07 Sportster Custom risers? About what does that setup cost?
