Default Ignition switch nut issue

I recently bought a 2011 Nightster and it has the ignition switch and coil relocation. The issue I’m having is the ignition switch nut won’t stay on. I put it over the switch and it just barley grabs any threads. I tightened it as much as I can by hand and it still falls off while riding. I tried to tighten it with a pair of pliers and once you tighten it so much it just loosened back up. I’m at a loss on what to do with it!l? It won’t fall off when the keys inserted so that’s good

I think you are saying the mounting plate has a hole that the switch inserts into and then on the opposite side of the place you place the nut, thereby holding the switch in placed.
1) Plate to thick...machine it or modify its thickness with a hammer and dolly.
2) Theads damaged ..inspect and repair.
3) Switch assembly error....is the switch assembled wrong so not enough threads do not show?

Seems simple enough, what I do is inspect first, then buy a new nut and blue Loctite the nut to the threads.
If that failed I'd look to modifying the mounting plate.

Good luck.

I’ll get a picture of it later. But it looks as if there’s plenty of threads but yet it only engages on a couple. From when the threads actually catch it only turns about 1/2-3/4 of a turn before it’s as tight as you can get it by hand. Which doesn’t seem right because there’s a lot of threads on the actual switch and the nut

This is a picture from another thread. But kinda helps explain, the issue I’m having is the nut will go on the actual switch but it slides down almost flush with the black housing before it actually threads on to anything. Then it only threads 3/4 of a turn at most. It looks like it should catch threads as soon as you slide the nut over the switch but mine doesn’t. Nothing appears to be messed up or anything.

Have you tried turning the nut over and screwing it on, sounds like the thread may be tapered?
you could always wrap some plumbers PTFE tape round it.
did the nut come with the switch before it was re located, or is it part of a kit with the mount?
if part of a kit, send it back. If the threads are not damaged, they must be a miss- match of sizes.

I bought the bike as is. But the nut looks exactly like the one pictured. The one pictured is from a stock bike in the stock location. All the relocation does is move the existing switch to a new location. It doesn’t change the housing or anything.
