Default Ape Hanger Setup

I recently picked up a 2014 Sportster 72 that has 14 inch apes. Currently my bars are full straight vertical. My situation is I am 5'9" and when making really sharp turn my arms are not long enough and find it difficult to keep my hands on the grip and brake/clutch lever when marking the turn.
My question is on vertical setup, specifically with turning, is there any advantage to having the bars straight and down as to apposed to pulled back on a angle, or is it a personal preference as to rider comfort and safety.

I couldn't imagine there is any advantage or disadvantage to the pull back angle on the bars. It would be all personal preference in my experience. In your case, it sounds like the straight up and down works as a disadvantage. Loosen the bolts on the clamp and pull those puppies back. It will make for a much safer and more comfortable ride.

You may also want to consider shorter bars.

Ride safe!

I'm 6' with factory mini apes, I've got those pulled back a bit. I wish they were taller but no difference on the angle other than comfort that I'm aware of or have had brought up.

Thanks for responding. I'll pull them back a bit and see how that works.

I have 16 inch apes on my 72. Never had a problem with keeping my hands on the grips. I also have them almost straight up and down also, but the pullback on these bars is a lil more than what others offer.
