Default Speedometer swap

I have a 1997 1200 Custom. When I bought it, it didn't have a speedo. My dad bought a 2001 custom for parts and gave me his electronic speedo off of it. We got it all wired up and plugged into the speed sensor under the seat and have power but it does not read speed.

What should my next step be? Someone told me I had to ride 35 miles for it to read. I haven't tried that yet.

Anyone think they have some failsafe that doesn't allow you to swap speedos due to the mileage reading?

I can tell you there is no specific fail-safe to the tune that you have mentioned. I don't believe the 35 miles is true either, as I have swapped speedos and it worked the minute I plugged it in and rode off. Couldn't hurt to try though. Time in the seat is not wasted.

I woould check you connections again, making sure wires are in the right place, clean them if necessary. Could be the speed sensor itself as well. I have heard and seen others mention the stator as it relates to speedo problems. Didn't make much sense to me but supposedly it has remedied similar problems in the past.
