So I just got this Harley 2000 Sportster 883 got it running went for a ride and in second gear if you just sitting there about going 25 30 mile an hour and it seems like it's slipping maybe I'm not sure but if you Hammer Down On It and it doesn't slip or anything that's the only gear it does it in if you get on it and go through all the gears going pretty fast you can't even tell that issue in second gear
It depends what exactly is meant by slipping . It could be slipping in and out of gear due to a worn or bent selector fork . This fault most commonly affects second gear on bikes in general because this gear is subject to more strain than the others during hard acceleration . As previously mentioned , I can't think of anything else that would only affect one gear .
Could be the shift detent wheel clip. The detent wheel keeps the shift drum from moving, which keeps the transmission in the gear selected.
The detent wheel is held on by a crappy little clip that is prone to breakage, when it breaks the detent wheel flops around letting the shift drum move.
On my bike I kept getting a false neutral shifting to 2nd gear. The detent wheel looks like a star, you can see the clip in the photo.
The clip on the detent star wheel is prone to breakage.
I don't know if it is slipping from the clutch I was talking to the Four Wheeler Dealer that's here in town he thinks it is a carb issue cuz I don't know if it's the clutch slipping or it's a carb issue in second gear if you hold it in a certain position just cruising it kind of feels like a surge in second
This is a nightmare trying to figure out this issue
I still think it's slipping between second and first gear and back to second but I can only base this on what you have said combined with my own experience of other bikes . It's asking a lot but could you post a video ?
I'm new here how do you send a video and I think you're right midpegs about my problem but I don't have the service manual right now and I don't dare take off my primary cover becauseI don't know if they come off in sequence or what
