Default Rear brake locking

Hi I had to do a emergency stop yesterday someone decided to turn left in front of me. Ad I was stopping my rear brake locked up and I slid lucky I managed to get out of it. Today I was driving down a side street in first gear and was comming to a stop at a stop sign and I felt my tail end skidding again. Now im mostly using my front brake there was no reason to lock up the rear I also noticed some squealing when I only apply the back brake.

Any suggestions on what I should look at kind of scared to take the bike back out again it's a 2011 883

When was the lat time you flushed the fluids or cleaned the piston in the caliper?

For what it’s worth I have a new sportster and the rear brakes squeal. Apparently it’s normal. Also locks up super easily. I almost exclusively use the front brake unless I need every bit of braking. And even then I barely use the rear brake.

Lol I wish. I heard a lot of sports riders do that though.

I have a 2019 Superlow, 120km on the ODO... Mine just did this on the rear brake as I was coming down the hill from my house. It is about 400meters of road, that drop about 150 feet vertically so I roll down clutch in, first gear set, and I also typically use 90% front brake except for today... Big rain yesterday and some slick mud in a few small areas still, so I was riding the rear brake to maintain control of the speed. This bike has the ABS system and it appeared to give a fairly loud "clack clack" and then give me back the brakes. I grabbed a handfull of front brake and brought it to a total stop with only about 10 to 15 feet of elevation left to go, and about 50 to 75 meters of road left to navigate.

My first bike with ABS, and it rather quickly made me suspicious of this new system. It didn't try to throw me, but I am not sure what to think about this as I ride it more and more. I do not have a choice on this hill thing. I live at the top of this road I built. The road is hand made concrete and in pretty good condition. Where it started clacking and acting up was still on the concrete section, before I got to the rocky road part that makes up the last 75 meters before I get to the main concrete road here where I live.

Is this just how ABS works on 2 wheel vehicles? I am used to this ABS thing in cars and trucks, but this really got my attention. The bike is about 10 days old for me...

Are these brakes linked?

How often do you practice Emergency braking?

It's likely you hit it harder than you thought you may have.

With no front I reckon a squeak would be expected.

I've had a 2011 883 since new and never suffered that problem, although in over 50 years of riding I have had similar problems on other bikes. There are various things that can cause that problem, such as corroded caliper piston, ditto caliper mounting pins, an accumulation of compacted brake dust or other stuff, preventing the pads from moving freely, your pads are very worn, the master cylinder is too full of brake fluid, your brake lever is sticking due to lack of lubrication, etc.

I recommend you bleed your brake with fresh fluid and clean the caliper thoroughly, including the piston, pads and mounting pins, also the brake lever pivot. If the pads are well worn replace them. If all that solves the problem, service your front brake the same way!

When I first got my bike I adjusted the rear pedal push rod In for less travel and a more responsive pedal.
It was perfect COLD, then once the brake disc, pad and fluid heated up, the fluid expanded and wouldn't let the piston retract.
