Default Shock length

Hi, can anyone tell me the eye to eye free length of rear shocks on a 2008 1200R, i.e. standard bike please?

Ray.

I have an '08 1200R. I have the stock shocks pulled off so I can measure the free length this evening if nobody else has this answer today.

That would be great. I have a 2009 1200L and have fitted Hagon shocks about 13” long to replace the standard 11 1/2” ish shocks, but they are not really enough.
the R shocks look better, and I intend to fit a pair of the longer damper tubes from the ‘08 R to put the forks to roadster length.
are you changing your shocks? I wondered if I could afford to buy them, what with postage to UK!

The R shocks are 13.25" or the whereabouts. If you aren't happy with 13" shocks, I doubt an extra .25" would help (STRICTLY SPEAKING ABOUT shock lengths only )

Yep, 13.25", I have that exact bike, an 08 XL1200R. FWIW replaced the stock shocks w/ Ohlins of the same length and they work great.

Ray, hello old chap, from a bit further South.

A word to the wise, when it comes to buying stuff from the USA! Shipping costs are very high and shocks are pretty heavy things. In addition, you WILL be charged VAT and other import duties by HM Customs when the package reaches the UK. You will typically receive an invoice for payment, with your package only being delivered after receipt of payment. The additional costs of those secondhand shocks may be - quite a shock! So consider carefully before committing. Exchange rates are not very good at present either.

I also have Hagon shocks on my Sporty. They are OK, but next time I will buy their Nitro version, for the better damping. Consider selling your current shocks and replacing with something better from the UK. It is even worth checking the price of genuine R shocks - try Jersey H-D for discounted prices (Jersey, Channel Islands!). As for your forks, check sag. You may be surprised how much the forks sag when you sit on your bike, compared with their stock full length. In the case of my SuperLow, bought new, they sagged more than 50%. I corrected that by using Race Tech single-rate springs and set the sag right, lifting the front almost an inch.

Have you considered the 13" air shocks off the bigger bikes? I don't know if these are easier to find in the UK or not.
See this link for a list of air shock part numbers / lengths.
