apache snow I agree with you although trans fluid hs bee used for years..So here is what I did....I put syn3 in the motor and in the primary I put in Torco t4 20w40...this will stay in for only a little while. I am going to order a new clutch from Harley and in the spring will put it jn...Then my bike will be all Harley..which is what I want. I was a little disappointed in their reply as they did not answer all my questions. They told me no synthetic..and did not answer what damage it might do to the gears. So my choice was the Torco t4 as it is not synthetic and available locally. The clutch seems to work better much smoother.

. Thanks to all of you for the input...I am very glad I joined this forum and will deff become a regular .

Well just logged in and after what I have read since yesterday.....I give-up , I don't know who to believe now.? I took it in good faith that what I read, viewed on youtube, and also with reassurance from a dealer was gospel, they can't all be wrong, can they.???
Well it matters not to me anymore because I shall simply use the recommended grade and quantity of oil for each orifice and be satisfied with that.

Kernow, I have to agree with you. But it is common knowledge that info from the internet is always to be suspect. Now, since all the info from the internet comes from the same population of people we meet in everyday life, including HD mechanics and wannabe mechanics, it carries the same level of authority.

From what I am reading, with different styles of motors in these sportsters of various year models, unless I am looking at the manual for my year model bike, I am going to keep an open mind. This is really confusing for me for such a simple concept to be so well buggered with opinions that to me indicate that at least SOMEONE has to be dead wrong.... and its not me, I really am not sure. I know what I HOPE is right, but that is little help with the HD brand being fickle over the past few years of profit struggles....

When Sportsters first came out they used a dry clutch. After going to a wet primary nothing has changed on them to date. Big twins also used a dry clutch till 1985 I think was the year they went to a wet clutch. Before then they had an auto primary chain oiler to keep the chain lubed. Before the auto chain oiler they had a total loss chain oiler with a hole in the stamped steel primary to let the excess oil out. That's were they got they all leak.Guys, I rode my 1st Harley in 1960 and have been working on them ever since.

He could be 5 years old wen he drove his first Harley and that makes him 84 / 85 or so, that is really normal. What surprises me more is that he is so
good with the computer, my father is 73 and even has a hard time with it

Hang on...

1960 - 2019 = 59 years

Add your age of 5 = 64.

To be street legal in the UK you would of been 16 in 1960 so that would make you 75.

You guys better pray you're even riding motorcycles at age 75. Much less wrenching on them.
