Default Tuned?

So I bought a set of screamin' eagles to replace the V&H straight shots and I think I may have the SE air cleaner. At least the filter part # looks to be the same. When I brought it home a few weeks ago (with the V&H and SE filter) it lightly bucked and surged at low speed steady cruising and the plugs look kind of white. How can I tell if it's been tuned? Where would a piggyback be? The pipes look like they've gotten hot. It's a 2011 Sportster 1200 Custom. So currently I have this air filter/cleaner and a new set of SE slip-ons. Replaced the plugs with NGK's. I just want the low speed surge gone and a nice tan color to the plugs.

Piggyback tuners are usually under the seat, but you can also check O2 sensors to see if they're routed different than stock. As far as slip-on pipes, filter & plugs, just have the dealer flash your ECM and it should take care of the surge.

Iceman24, do the plugs look lean to you? There's no Xied on the O2's.

Color of plugs isn't much of an indicator nowadays & blued pipes are norm as well. If bike's running fine & not too hot, you're good.

Ok thanks. I was thinking of using a set of Xied's if you think they'll stop the surging. Otherwise it's hibernating for now and I may get a tuner towards spring. I'm thinking the original owner got the V&H's and air cleaner installed when he got the bike. I would think the dealer flashed it.

Color of the plugs is a good indicator, looking at your plugs and the blue color on the pipes I can tell you its lean. Buy a tuner or have the dealer take care of it.

Honestly as much as I like the idea of stage 1 I might just go on fleabay and get a stock back plate and filter, at least for now. (Anybody have a nice one? Don't need the cover) Stock is still a fun ride and way cheaper than a tune. I had thought I was going to leave it alone but I've already spent a small fortune on it!

Instead of Xieds look atvthe ViEDs. Same company, but the V version is adjustable. It does make a difference. Play with the adjustment enough and you can smooth out most of those coughing spells. Works well for me.

Cool Good way to test ...

as a test ...used some duct tape and start with covering up about a 1/4 of the air filter ...and take it for ride ...then add a little more to about haft the filter ...retest ...
checking the plugs with each test ...until the lean surge is gone ...should tape and mark the throttle grip 0-25-50-75-100 ...this will give you an idle where the surging is happening
good luck ...
