ALL 2004 Sportsters had a carb. O2 sensors came with the 2007 and newer bikes. There is no way for an O2 sensor to control the fuel delivery since there is no ECM either. If you have O2 sensors on your bike, the pipes came off a newer model. New pies for a 2004 does not come with bungs for sensors.

My thoughts exactly. However the bike has (what looks like) stock headers with V&H slip ons. Ill drop a picture for reference later today.
I wonder why I haven't got any surplus wiring then. Where exactly are these sensors ?
Here's a page from the 04 manual and I'm not seeing any sensors. I would have thought that 2007 EFI models would be more likely to have them .
i do actually have the wiring. The new pipes are on and the sensors are currently hanging loose as I have not complete the work.
If and it is a big if the wiring loom has support for O2 sensors there is a connector at the bottom of the left hand downtube. Below where the clutch adjuster is and the other connector is on the left side in front of the battery housing.
If they are there then I can only think someone changed the wiring loom. If all you are describing is the wires coming from the headers then that is because they are as stated above from a 2007 and up bike.
I do not see why your bike would have the wiring for O2 sensors if they are not fitted as standard . This is getting confusing now .
how is it confusing? I have removed the stock headers (with slip ons) and they had o2 sensors connected to the stock header pipe. Whats confusing about it?

Because you said the bike has the wiring for O2 sensors but it's a carbed 04 .
Oh FFS ! You mean the wires are on the sensors . Let's wrap this up . Just stick some blanking plugs in the pipes . You don't have sensors on a carbed bike . THE END. 😁

thanks for the calm and constructive feedback. Haha
