Default O2 Sensor Help

Hi All,

New member here!

I’ve recently bought a 1200 Sportster (it’s a 2004, Carb model. Rubber mounted).

I’ve just recently changed the pipes from the stock ones (the bike was pretty much stock all these years) and (what I believe to be) the o2 sensors seem corroded and not in good shape.

my questions;

1) do I actually need to run these sensors on an older carbureted bike?

2) if not, what do I have to do except plug the holes in the new pipes?

any help and advice appreciated! Thanks.

Plug the holes with O2 bung plugs, using anti seize on the threads in case you ever decide to use O2 sensors to check how well the carb is doing.

I also have an 04 carburettor model ( Roadster ) with a Vance and Hines system that has no O2 sensors at all, so clearly there's no need for them . I assume that these things are fitted to the exhaust headers somewhere .

cheers!

however, the bike does have the sensors already in situ. Reckon I should just plug them then see how I get on?

O2 sensors are only any good for closed loop fuel injection system.

Remove the O2 sensors & plug the ports. Most likely they are 18mm, but will
depend on the year of the pipes you used, they could be 12mm.

Something like this is what you're looking for;

My 1200 had drag pipes when I got it, replaced those with later model nightster pipes that had o2 sensor holes. Just put plugs in them, no further issue.

I wonder why I haven't got any surplus wiring then. Where exactly are these sensors ?
Here's a page from the 04 manual and I'm not seeing any sensors. I would have thought that 2007 EFI models would be more likely to have them .
