Question
The manual calls for DOT5 brake fluid but local auto places only carry 3 or 4. I did find a 5.1 but that was $10 for a 4oz bottle. Is 5 a motorcycle only thing?
Not a motorcycle thing. DOT 5 is silicon based fluid. Doesn't absorb moisture and is non-toxic, so won't harm your paint if you spill it. Plenty of antique car owners use it for long storage.

Yeah, DOT 5 and 5.1 can't mix. I take it you don't have ABS, as DOT 5 doesn't play nice with ABS systems.
Well its a moot point at this time. Rather than cause a problem, I decided to bleed the brakes with what was in the reservoir since it was nearly to the top. Was having the wife pump the brakes and I was bleeding, when I noticed the rear caliper rocking, not sliding. Sooooo something is definitely wrong. Brake pedal feels like crap, so my bike is down till I get funds to do this repair right. Would have been cheaper to pay a shop $50 to R&R the rear wheel.
This is a dumb mistake I will remember a long time.
Ok did a little MORE research, and the DOT 4 is correct for my bike, as multihrdr said. In my research, I found one comment that would have made it real easy. It is embossed on the rear master cylinder reservoir cap. DOT 4, duh. I also took a flashlight so I could see real close, and found there is a gap between the mounting bolt and caliper body, so the cross threading did not work, obviously. So I will be getting a helicoil, as soon as I can figure out what thread pitch that bolt is.
Yes on the calipers. I need to pull the bolt back out, but I fear the threads will be ruined. Maybe not since it is steel against an aluminum wheel caliper. Worst case I can take it to someone to determine pitch. Thing is, I would like to be able to order the helicoil online. I checked the local shops today and they want nearly double for the same brand.
If its, say a M12 will the OD of the threads, be 12mm?

I assume you have Metric selectable digital calipers?
Yes, 12mm will measure approx 12mm on the OD.
Now measure from thread to thread ... 1.25mm ? ... 1.50mm ?
You can do that in multiples of threads to make it easier ... the more threads, the easier to Differentiate. For example 5 threads... does it measure 6.25mm or 7.5mm?
