Do you really have to, Did you do it anyways, Have someone hold the brake on when tightening the slider bold down?
Did you find out the heli coil size yet? Id probably just use blue locktite on it, going back together.

Edit, Sorry, I hadn't read the rest of it.
That's a Bummer Man, It really does look like those slider bolts would remove the caliper.
I would say with the piston depressed, you should be able to slide the caliper back and forth.

I tried bleeding it, but when the wife was pumping the brake pedal, I can see the caliper rocking, not sliding. No on the size, will do that this morning though. The reason it is rocking, is after that, I realized the bolt is not seating fully, because of the cross threading.

I will measure, and get and install appropriate sized helicoil, and re-install. Hopefully this is the last I will have to deal with the caliper.

Well, I pulled the bolt to measure. The diameter starts at 11.0 at the starting end (NOT the first thread, but several in) of the threads and goes to 11.7 at the end. Threads seem to measure 1.7mm apart.

After the measurements, I took the wire. Rush on my grinder to it, and cleaned all the crap off the threads. It actually bottomed completely out this time. OK good so far. Then I backed it almost completely out and pressed down on the brake pedal while I tightened the bolt back up. Took it for a test run, and now it feels like it did when the rear brake went out on a trip last summer.

This is getting really annoying. I believe I now actually have the mounting issue solved, I believe, but now back to square one on no pedal. It feels like there is no brake there at all.

Last summer when this happened, I found an HD dealer (Morgan Hill House of Thunder) and all they did was bleed the brakes. Worked perfectly until you know who pulled the caliper off.

Suggestions?

Oh yes, can someone take a look at their bike, press the rear brake with your foot while looking at the rear caliper, And see if it rocks slightly? Mine still does and not sure why.

With it screwing all the way in, now, I am not as concerned about the helicoil. If I can figure out why the pedal is almost non existent, I will ride it till I can get a new one. I do need to know if the rocking is normal, and or what happened to cause the loss of pedal pressure.

Ok did some more searching and found this thread https://www.hdforums.com/forum/sport...-brakes-2.html and his issues are almost identical to mine. So its not in my head, these rear brakes are flat out weird. After reading that thread I went out and did a short test ride. Brakes were crummy. Got back, parked the bike, read some more. Tested again, hey, I have pedal. I can actually lock up the rear tire. All this is very odd indeed.

Anyway, it now LOOKS like I have my brakes back.

Oh, by the way, that short run, about 6 miles total, I can really feel a difference in the new tires, the Dunlop AEs. Hopefully all is well now. Man what a process.

I know on a floating caliper, if it's not sliding properly you won't get a good pedal.
does it still rock, when you hit the brake?
maybe it wasn't seated quite right on the sliders.
