do all kinds of redoing to my engine just to put different pipes on my 07 883L?
is there somethingi can do on the cheap to put new pipes on without making the engine run like crap and without paying lots of money for this?
thanks
i put cycle shack slip-ons on my 07...no issues with it running bad....and it sounds great....1/2 hour job....change the air cleaner and you have to remap the ECU..
If you increase one side of that pump (exaust or intake) then the whole pump needs to be adjusted to run properly.
So basically, if you change the exause you USUALLY have to re-jet and change the air cleaner.
Otherwise it would run like crap.
Wrong!
Granted an internal combustion engine is an air pump. But unless you provide a way for the pump to get more air on the front end, it is not gonna pump any more air, regarless of what you do to the back end of the pump.
After about 5,000 miles, I installed cycle shack slip on mufflers on the bike, and did no other performance enhancements at that time. The bike ran just the same as always, it just had a louder exhaust. I rode the bike for about 4,000 miles with that setup. Then I installed a Screamin Eagle Air Cleaner and re-jetted and turned the carb. There was a slight increase in the exhaust volume, and a considerable increase in performance at that point.
I'm not sure about the 07 models, but you can get cycle shack mufflers at the website below for $120, including shipping.
Due to the EPA people and HD trying to make them happy, the 07 Sportsters are EFI and run lean from the factory to make the emissions standards. So putting slip-ons on an 07 although will probably run ok on the outside, they will make th engine run leaner and there for hotter. Heat at highway speeds is no big deal because the air will keep her cool, but sitting in town at lights and so on will probably blue the pipes, possibly over heat and over stress the engine.
I would recommend, after researching this issue for many hours myself, to go with the HD Race Tuner (ECM replacment, not a piggy back module) and get the pipes and air cleaner you want then it will run right, sound right, and have a lot more power. I realize this is a bit expenive but with the EFI bikes and the strict EPA on the newer models its the best and safest way to go. The total stage one is about $750 for my '07 883R out the door.
In addition the HD Race Tuner has the maps for any mods you do and the map for a 1200 conversion so you'll never have to upgrade the computer again.
You decide what you want to do, but running just pipes on an '07 could do some harm depending on all the other variables.
Running lean from the factory is not new to the EFI bikes. Due to EPA regs they have been setting up the bikes to run lean for several years. As a matter of fact, the EFI allowed them to open up the exhaust slightly on the 07 sportsters. Believe it or not, they are somewhat louder than the 04 - 06 Sportys were.
The only way I could see that there would be any difference, is if they have some type of sensor in the stock mufflers that provide feedback to the computer that runs the EFI system.
