Primary case redline oil problem
when I got back I decided to do the primary oil. Problem is the redline kit came with transmission fluid with shockproof and primary case fluid.
I used the transmission fluid and the primary case was very noisy when I took it out for a test ride. Made a whirring sound I dont remember it making. Is that normal, or should I drain that fluid and go with the primary fluid or the extra 20w-50 I have left over (two extra quarts out of five)? Shifts were easy and made no other indications of a problem.
Other Red Line options for Sportsters are Power Sports 20w-50 engine oil, MT-90 transmission fluid and 75w-90NS diff lube without the limited slip additive.
Of the products you have I would run the 20w-50 in the primary/transmission.
It is compatible with the wet clutch and about the same viscosity as HD Formula+ .
The V-Twin Power packs are for the HD Big Twin bikes that have a separate primary and transmission fluid.
The Red Line PowerSports transmission lube has a "shockproof" additive that tends to gum up the Sportster clutch plates but is very good for the BT transmission.
I rode through the Anza valley through the Ortega Highway and down to the Temecula wine country. Its straight windy roads with lots of down shifting and up shifting and I had just done the same ride the day before. Very noticeable change in how the engine felt when rpms got high in 3rd and 4th gear.
Ill be throwing the 20w-50 in and then changing the primary fluid a couple times over the next couple weeks to try to get that shockproof out of there
Thank you for contacting Red Line Oil, in the shared Sportster primary/transmission the 75W90 is recommended, a product that has been used extensively and performs well.
The 75W90 is the product we have have used for a number of years with very good results in Sportster/Buell transmissions, matching the viscosity and type fluid called for.
The 80W Motorcycle Gear Oil is a lower viscosity than called for, the ShockProof gear oils can due to their unique characteristics could cause sticking of the Harley clutches.
The 75W90 would be preferred and recommended over 80W Motorcycle Gear Oil in these applications.
There can be issues with some GL-5 gear oils in certain applications. Some can be corrosive to brass, bronze or copper, not an issue with our GL-5 gear oils, they dont cause corrosion, pitting or metal removal. In a synchro equipped transmission the friction modifiers contained in many gear oils can make them too slippery, though not the case in a motorcycle transmission with dog rings.
So if you want the right viscosity and dont want to worry about it damaging anything, go with Redline http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=133&pcid=4
