Default Jetting troubles!

Hey everyone. I'm new to Harleys and absolutely suck with carburetors. I just got a 96 883 with a 1200 conversion.
I'm getting ready to put on a spiked air cleaner with a K&N filter and a 2" straight down drag pipe setup. Does anyone have just a place to start with jetting to cope with that setup? baffles for the exhaust system that don't kill the sound but won't shake windows a mile away? Any help is greatly appreciated!

2" Straight Down Drag Pipes, sounds like a LAF setup. A photo of the intended exhaust would really help.

Need to get a fuel rail on it and have Vance & Hines send you their custom v-rod race baffles for 2”. It’ll scream. Most likely a 220 main to run best with the fuel rail.

Start with a 45 pilot jet and 175 main jet

This is the exhaust I'm looking at. Thank you guys for the advice, I'm also not 100% sure what you mean when you say "fuel rail"

Well I've had a good look online and I did find one or two references to a Fuel Rail but no pictures . Perhaps you would be kind enough to enlighten both myself and the OP as to what this thing is and what it does . Thanks in advance .

I think madnss is being a bit mischievous today.

Fuel rails are part of FI systems, delivering fuel to the injectors. This virus is affecting us not only physically, but mentally as well.

+1 on a 45/175 or 180 to start.

John

I think there is a lot of myth building on rejetting... the best way, IMHO, is to:

Install an idle thumb screw and an air/fuel jet thumb screw from CV Performance plus some new plugs. Adjust the air/fuel mix to 2 or maybe 2-1/2 turns out. If it idles reasonably well and starts with the choke on, you've got that right. You can go as high as 3 turns out and as low as 1-1/2 (you won't do the lesser I don't think).

Ride the bike until it is well warm and then pull the plugs and look at them. If they are whitish (not tan) take the >set< of main and lowspeed jets that you next bought and start going up on lowspeed (until it takes off ok) and main jet until the spark plugs are tan. I don't remember the lowspeed increments but the mains go up by 5. Some people say you don't need to adjust low speed sizes if you have the air/fuel mix properly done. As someone else said, indirectly, straight through pipes don't necessarily perform as well as when they have performance baffles unless you are drag racing with a bunch of other improvements.

Or, get an older mech with experience on CV carbs and have him/her do it. It's easy to get a pig in a poke when it comes to used CV carbs, also. If you like to work on your bike then mastering a CV carb is a good thing... many hours of er... fun.
