Default Dual throttle cable difference

Anyone know what warrants two part numbers for the throttle and return cables? Short of pulling them off, I'm failing to see how they differ. Guessing length somehow make them different. Or is it the feruls?

Handlebar swap got me digging into this and am now distracted with the rabbit hole of part #'s. just to have 2ish inch taller bars on my 08 custom.

Thanks in advance.

Push inner cable (return) is shorter and has a spring on the carb side. That's it.

What year is your bike?

On the 2008 and 2017 the cable ends of the inner at the twist grip are identical. The idle cable at the throttle body has a small spring on it.

There is a retaining ring on the cable and that is different I am guessing so you can only put them on one way.

The real question though is the idle cable absolutely necessary, what is its purpose and what problem does it solve?

The earlier bikes didn't have the "idle cable" It's a safety return cable in case of a crash your engine doesn't stay at high RPMs.
Is it necessary, no.

Not in my opinion. The spring on the carburetor (or throttle body) is more than strong enough to return it to idle screw stop. From what I have read, the earlier dual cable handlebar throttle housing is basically the same as the older single cable. So, I can delete my idle cable and the throttle housing has an internal stop to prevent over travel in the "closed" throttle position. The later housing can be modified by installing a screw as a throttle stop. There is a post about this over on XLforum.net, but I have not been able to find it to post it here. I'm not sure how late the housing had the internal stop, but I believe it's a few years beyond my 1991.

On my 1991, I have a Barnett throttle cable and am planning to delete both stock cables and use just the Barnett throttle cable next time I pull off the carb and/or lube the cables. My throttle housing is supposed to have an internal stop, which makes deleting the idle cable easier. I will just find a short cap screw to plug the hole where the idle cable enters.

The pull-pull system was a federal mandate in case the return spring failed, thank your government, I guess. Also had a hand in the shutoff on the bars when you fall.
