Ghost electrical problems solved - I hope
These problems have been plaguing me for months. Here's the condensed version.
My 2012 XL1200CP was running terrible, surging and spitting. It was throwing two codes: PO 108 and PO 113. That's the T-Map Sensor and the IAT. Then it added another code, which I've forgotten.
I did what I could, checking connections, cables, fuses, etc., but nothing helped. I replaced the map sensor in mid-December, but I later found out it went bad again. That was perplexing.
I finally took it into my indy mechanic and he re-connected the battery ground cable because he said the guy who had the bike before me had it connected wrong. I had checked it before. It was snug but not tight enough apparently. He put in a can of K-100 for any possible moisture in the bottom of the gas tank and added a gallon of gas.
He cleared the codes and drove it, said it ran fine. But I could tell within two minutes of driving it away from the shop it was not fixed. By the time I got home, it was running worse than ever. Codes returned, engine light came back on.
So as a last result, I took it to the dealer.
The dealer said the connector to the sensor was bad and that was what caused the sensor to go bad and the source of the faulty signals to the ECM. Replaced the connector and the sensor and replaced the terminal socket (16-20AWG) and wire seal (16 20 AWG/BLUE).
It was a $400 hit - mainly labor - but the bike is running much better now and the codes have not returned, nor has the engine light.
Still, it does not seem to be running optimally. It seems a little sluggish in first gear, like it isn't getting enough gas, then it will catch suddenly and fire like it's supposed to. It's subtle and I don't think a lot of people would notice it, but I've had the bike two years now and I can tell.
