Default Desperately need help

So I think I'm nakerd the threads in my rear cylinder exhaust port. Goes is fine for a couple of turns and then gets stupidly tight. The bolt never can off the stud the hole stud would just undo which was super annoying but couldn't do anything about it. Does anyone know the tap size I would need to run down there to see if I can knock out any ****ed bits?

Look mate I was in a rush to get the bike back together to go on a memorial run for a fallen brother. So instead of your stupid sarcasm I would really appreciate help, but if your not going to give that please don't bother.

This information has come up in several places

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/dyna-...l#post10223336

So two different thread pitches on the stud so be careful.

Thread size, thread size. Have you put a measure across the threads?

A 1/2" nut is its across flats size not its thread size.

Clearly then you don't need any help?

Got a hacksaw? Take your stud and put four 45 degree cuts in the end little more then thread depth. Now hopefully, you have a file. Looking a the end, take your file and nick it so it looks like it has a cutting edge on each side of slit slight back to relieve it but not lower edge of slit.

Now with a little oil try your stud back in hole removing it ever turn to brush off and crud and reoil.

Let's make a fresh start shall we? And keep your bad manners to yourself Frazer, it helps nobody. Remember YOU are the one asking for help, so just ignore those who are not helpful - we're not on t'Witter!

AFAIK the threads in the head for those studs are 'tighter' than normal, so if you use a standard tap (you will need a 'plug') it is likely you will create a looser thread than required. I suggest you buy a new replacement, which will enable you, with care, to cut a slot along the length of the old one to see if any blockages can be gently removed.

Better still would be to find a local indy who already has the correct tools and can do what needs to be done quicker than we can write about it here! If that thread is damaged the solution may be to weld up the hole and make a fresh start. I've had to go down that route on a shovelhead, years ago.

Depending on how bad the threads are, you could always install a heli coil.

So after a brief panic attack, self doubt and hating I was able to call my local Harley dealership and they were able to help out allot. Spent a while on the phone with them, and they suggested getting a 5/16 X 18 second tap and gently run that down there with some oil to help clear out anything that might of deformed in there. So I ordered one. Only after ordering one did a mate get in touch who works on old cars and he had one 🤦‍♂️ but I've ordered it now so IL take a minute away from it to finsh up welding the exhaust ready for when the tap comes. Oh I also ordered another set of studs and bolts as the stud itself some of the threads are a little flat, so it could be a combination of everything. But hopefully this tap will sort it out.
