Default VOES Vacuum Source

Still working on assembly of my 2002 883 Sportster that was bought disassembled completely with virtually no labelling of the loose parts. I have made a lot of progress but am currently, after much searching online, hung up on where the VOES is connected to vacuum. My CV40 carb has a vacuum port on top which is capped off and appears to lead to a point outside the throttle plate. Seems like it should be a source of manifold vacuum. Should my intake manifold have a port on it?

Thanks in advance.

There's a vacuum port on the top of the stock Keihin CV40 carb, near the manifold side of the carb. You will need to "T" it off to the vacuum petcock if you have one, they use the same port. You want the port outside the throttle plate to get true engine vacuum. 3/16" vacuum/gas line works

If you also have a port on the side of the carb near the fuel inlet, plug it, as it is just a carbon canister vacuum port to purge the carbon can. Probably found only on CA model carbs.

When you refer to the port "outside the throttle plate" are you referring to the air cleaner side of the throttle plate?

If you want engine vacuum you need the back side of the throttle plate, the engine side.
Years ago I drilled out a zerk fitting, removed the ball and spring and then I drilled a hole in the manifold. The gutted zerk fitting was self tapping so I screwed it into the manifold making my own vacuum port. It worked out real well.

Thanks Dave. Seems like a good way to it. Wonder why Harley didn't do something similar.

it was on my old evo. IIRC the stock carb had a port for the VOES but my bigger aftermarket upgraded carb didn't.
Those parts you have may not be original.

No, the intake manifold side of the throttle plate. That's where you get actual engine vacuum. Just uncap the port you have already. It's not rocket surgery.

They did, on later models with a MAP sensor, which is attached to top of the manifold. The CV40 probably had a port already, why would Harley duplicate what already existed and works?

After they put on a MAP sensor, that carb port was just used to operate the vacuum petcock, AFIK.
