I met a guy camping last year who worked on giant windmill generators. He said the biggest problem is the transmission, having to gear up to high RPM for electricity generation from the low RPM windmill blades that generate huge amounts of torque. He said it was tremendously difficult to build a transmission strong enough to do that. This guy supposedly flew all over the world to repair wind turbines and seemed to know his stuff. IDK, I'd never really thought about it until he told me about his job.
