I forgot that HD likes to make things exceptionally difficult when it comes to trying to install things yourself. Does anyone know what size hex bit I need to mount the detachable sideplates for a sissy bar on a 2007 XL50? I was all set to do it but I don't have any hex bits. Dammit.
Don't settle on getting just the one size you need -- go to Sears or whomever, and get the full set. They aren't that expensive and trust me, you'll end up using all of them.
The set I got wasn't all that expensive, and it has 1.5, 2. 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10mm. Made by Eklind (USA), but I don't remember where I picked them up. Be sure you get metric or you'll end up rounding out the bolt slot. My sissybar bolts are 4mm, but yours may be different.
Of course if you plan to do anything else on that bike, you'll need set a set of torx wrenches as well Don't buy the cheap ones. The MoCo uses some serious thread locker and you'll round off the cheap ones.
By the way (you probably already know this), be sure to hold the head of the bolt and twist the nut loose, not the other way around. Puts a lot less stress on the slot in the bolt
Set of torx bits 20 bucks - Allen bits 10 bucks @ Wall Mart . You will need both set sooner or later . On my backrest I had to run a 1/4" - 28 tap into the threads , first screw in was trashed - also use anti- sieze lube on them . Good Luck !
