I have a 96 Sportster 1200 evolution, all of a sudden I have an oil leak in the front of the engine. started out a few drops but now leaks too much to ride. cant see where the leak is coming from, does anyone have an idea where it might be?? thanks
Where on the front are you talking about?? Is it up higher near the rocker box, on the cylinder, lower on the engine case. If it's below the cylinder, oil filter seal could be leaking, oil pressure switch could be leaking, could be leaking between the split in the engine cases or the lower cylinder gasket. Up higher, it could be the rocker gaskets or head gasket. It may help to give the oil covered area a good wipe down to clean everything up real good, then take a ride, the cleaned up area should make it easier to identify where it's comming from.
Although if the bike is leaking bad enough that you can't ride it, then it'll be obvious where it is comming from. If it's not leaking to a point that it's obvious where it's comming from, most likely you'll be just fine for riding around town and whatnot, just keep an eye on things.
well, took the bike to the harley shop. its leaking from a brass plug installed at the factory in a drainage hole. to get this fixed they tell me the engine has to be removed , the case drilled and tapped, and a threaded oil plug inserted. Cost will be 500 to 800 bucks. anyone know how deep to drill ? and is there an oil port right under this brass plug? Considering trying this repair myself..
