Right then folks , as some of you may be aware I have left this section and bought myself a 96cu Super Glide . However I felt compelled to return here to tell those of you who have only experienced a Sportster that you are riding a damn fine motorcycle . I can tell you , having now experienced both worlds , that all this talk about Sportsters being girls bikes and not being a real Harley , is such a contemptible load of nonsense that it is not even worth arguing about . Sportsters are GREAT bikes and don't let any Big Twin riding snob tell you any different . Have a great weekend in the wind whatever you ride !
I agree. I also ride a Road King and my Sporty still pulls better from a start. Matter of fact my Sporty gets more looks from girls than the King, so I guess in that sense it is a "girls bike".
Sporty name has been around from 1957 so I assume it is a Harley. As for the Girls bike BS that is some new thing people find to bitch about.
Sportster fills a need as does softail, touring ect. We all have our likes and dislikes. Personal I think the RK is joke.
Blame the clubs. Back in the day, your American Twin had to be 1200cc if you wanted to join up to many of those groups.
Regardless, Sportsters are still fine motorcycles.
I rode just about everything Harley made at a dealer demo day in 2014. While they were all nice and the larger ones were more comfortable, the Sportster was the only one that put a big grin on my face when I rode it. It still does 8 years later.

I wonder who invented to call a girl bike about the least comfortable bike from Harley: with worse low-speed stability, stiff seat, poor suspension, strong vibrations, hard clutch lever, no wind protection, etc Terrible bike, who would ever want to ride it?
