Recently the low fuel light on my 2011 XL883N speedometer has started illuminating when there's plenty of fuel in the tank. It is illuminated at the moment and I know there is two UK gallons in the tank.
Has anyone else experienced this problem, if so how did you cure it?
This is very much inline with the gear indicator not working. Do you actually need it?
The low level light is not a fuel gauge on the Sportster but a thing that floats in the petrol and at some point makes a switch.
Some petrol in the tank the black float is up some and the meter is showing open circuit.
The petrol in the tank has fallen and the black float is now at the bottom of its travel and the meter is showing a very low resistance.
It is not that straight-forward however as there is a resistor network inline that feeds to the speedo.
ETA: In 2008 resistors in resistor pack were both 240 ohms. In 2017 they were changed to 2K and 8k ohm. I don't know what they are in 2011.

When I turned on the ignition today, the low fuel light extinguished after a few seconds, it could have been possible that the float was stuck down from when I last emptied the tank of it's fuel.
I think that everything is alright now, I'll find out when the fuel level drops and the low light comes on again.
