I got a two digit code from the Harley dealer for my 1986 sportster XHL 883 every where I read it as a four digit key code can can any one tell me if they gave two digit key codes

I have no idea. Why not contact a locksmith and see if a key can be cut from a two digit code? I can look at my 1991 key when I get home.
It's very possible they only used two digits, that gives at least 100 combinations.

If your key has that black plastic covering on the head piece, you can slide that out to reveal the code. My 2011 XL1200C key has a 2 letter code, so my guess is it could be any combination of alpha and numeric.
The barrel style keys used on the touring and Softail bikes use a 4-digit code.
