Handlebar upgrade
Was looking to get apes for my 88 sporty xlh 883 which I recently did a 1200 conversation and I found ones on Harley for a iron 883 but is says it wont fit my bike, but the bars on my bike now are 1 inch diameter just like the iron 883 chizeled satin black handlebars on Harley so why wouldnt it fit?

Biltwell advertise their handlebars as fitting 1982 to 2022, so there's no reason why any 1" diameter bars won't fit a 1988 Sportster.
It could be that the seller is covering his **** by saying they won't fit an '88 Sportster, or he hasn't got a clue what fits which model.

I don't know if 1988 used the "dimpled channel" in the bars, so you might want to make sure that's still the case. Dimpled bar channels are a solution in search of a problem. One of the dumbest ideas ever.
