Default bigger front sprocket?

I have a 2007 883L and I have been using the search to try and find some answers but have not had much luck. I do alot of highway riding with bigger bikes. My problem is that sometimes we get on highways that if youARE doing the speed limit you could get ran over! When I am running at higher speeds the bike is screaming the whole time. Would a bigger front sprocket do anything for engine rpm's or top end speed? If so, is this something I could buy from HD? I was thinking about trading it in on a bigger bike but the money is not there and I really love my sportster!

Default RE: bigger front sprocket?

yea you should be able to get the 1200's sproket and replace the 883 one. it should drop the RPM I think 400 or so. I beleive this can be done without belt change but try to stay under 2 teeth increase so you arent lugging bad on take off. I know others have done this with pretty good luck. hope this helps.

Heres a chart that relates to Sportster enginedBuell sprocket variations, (speeds are theoretical) It might give you an idea of what to expect re speed differences between different pulley set ups

The original set up is 29/55, I ran the 27/61 setup on my bike for a while, but found it far too revvy for long trips on motorways ect. And have settled on the 27/55 which gives a little more on acceleration without denting top end cruising too much .

All were done without the need to change belt, although the 27/55 is quite close to the end of the adjustment limit.

Hope this is of some help

Hi.

I have exactly the same bike as yours (make and year model) and I have done the same thing. I wanted to buy the 1200 Sportster. I went to the bike mechanic to service my bike and to do some repairs. He advised me to fit a bigger front sprocket as it will give me more power and the revolution on the engine will be lower. I could have felt after that, that there is definitely more power on my bike and the revolution on the engine is lower just like the bike mechanic told me. I always fill my bike up with fuel completely and zero the speedometer. After the bigger sprocket I noticed that I got 40 kilometers less on a tank of fuel. The first time I thought it could be a fault. The second time I filled up my bike I noticed that the result is the same. On the long run it is going to be quite expensive especially on the long road if I'm going to travel far distances. I'm going this week to the bike mechanic the fit my old sprocket back.

Wink

Your bike is fine - YOU should be wearing ear plugs, then it won't seem to be screaming so much. My 883 is fine for cruisin' up to 90 mph on stock gearing, with a qd windshield.

Can honestly say I put a 28T 883 sprocket on my roadster1200 and will ever go back. Bike feels so much more responsive. At those rpms, it's negligible on the highway. I have to be honest, the roadster sucks on the highway so I might as well have more torque.

Well done Steve. I lowered the gearing on my Dyna by swapping from a 25T comp to 21T, with wonderful benefits, have also lowered the gearing on my Glide, by a similar amount. Unfortunately one of the consequences of emmissions regulations over the years has been to raise Harley gearing, to lower engine speed and noise, something dead easy to 'put right', especially on our Sportsters!
