Im new here so, take it easy.
I own a XL1200CB from 2015.
Put a new battery last year (+- April).
No problems at all except when winter come.
Less rides (sometimes 2 or 3 weeks stoped). Winter in Portugal is not very cold (worst case, 0-2 Cş), but with a lot of humidity.
Bought Optimate 6 last month, and connected over the nigh, once a week.
Last weekend, couldn't start (even if optimate showed test as green). Put 30min connected, and it started. Ride during the day, with stops etc, and no problem.
Left if connected during the all week.
Same sh** when took it. Green on test, but couldn't start. It chugs but never gets there.
After a few hours connected, it started. Stoped, connected optimate, and it gave me red light on test.
"My" mechanic, which i trust, said it needs a new battery. Not even an year!!! I'll try warranty, but i'm afraid problem may be on another place.
I'll live my bike with him during the week to check, and a full maintenance, but.... any idea what could be?
1. You can get a bad battery sometimes.
2. Get the battery load tested, it will tell you if the battery is good or not. Most auto parts stores will do it for free.
3. Report back your findings.
I leave my tender plugged in 24/7 and seem to be able to get 5-6 years out of a battery.
One thing I have found with these little batteries is if it gets run dead once they are never the same and if they get run dead a few times they are toast no matter how new they are.
The OP may also want to check the tender too. I had my Fatboy hooked up 24/7 and it was green but battery not charged enough to get it started. My new Deka battery was on a brand new Deltran BT overnight and solid green, installed and hooked up to the old BT and was green…. Disconnected that old tender and hooked up the new one and the light went red! The old BT is in the trash.
My BT is new also. Kinda 2 months old.
I'll try to check battery first, but sportsters batteries are really small, and i think it went flat once (didn't ride for 3 weeks).
Also, at that time i wasn't able to let it hooked 24/7.
On the newer CANBus Sportsters, it appears there is always some sort of parasitic draw.
If I had one, I would pull the Main Maxi-Fuse if you are not going to ride it regularly.
Or put a tender on it. I like the Noco Genius line of chargers... https://no.co/products/charging/genius
And as always, make sure the cable connections to the bike (as well as the
battery ends) are clean & tight....
I read something about it
That's why i use this https://optimate1.com/moose/ (the 6).
I dont want to pull the fuse because alarm is important.
Its just, that, i put a new battery April 22. Not even an year passed
