Default Question

Is this stock for a 1997 Sportster 1200? I want to ask y'all before I pull it out and replace it with a DYNA S module. Looks awefully clean.

Looks fine for me. Why not just use the Dyna 2000i plug in module, you won't have to pull wires. Just remove old module and plug in new one, I had to retard my timing 2* since the 2000i puts in 30* timing and 28* was recommended for my 1250 kit.

That's your stock timing pickup, which tells your ignition module when to fire. The ignition module implements the curve.

This is a far, far superior setup to the Dyna S. The Dyna S is a points replacement device that relies on a mechanical advance unit. It's not nearly as accurate or precise as an electronic ignition like you already have. It also has more moving parts that can fail. Fitting up a Dyna S is a giant step backwards from what you already have.

If you would like to upgrade your ignition, I recommend a Dyna 2000 8-pin. It's plug and play. You just unplug and remove your stock ignition module (under that cover on the left side, under your seat), put the Dyna in it's place, plug it in, and set the DIP switches for the advance curve and rev limit you want. It also has an LED to facilitate static timing, which I highly encourage you to do. Watch this video to see how it's done.

I used to run a Dyna S and moved to the 2000i. The dyna S is pretty nice but I did have a mechaincal timing advance fail on me. Eventually, as the pins wear on the weights they will start to expand more and more untill eventually the weights start hitting the CAM cover and causing timing issed and slowly grind the metal away. I was lucky to catch it right away. The 2000i with the voes is a much better setup.

The 2000i has a rev limiter as well. I never thought I would need the rev limiter but I had a friend trip while walking past my bike as it idled. He grabbed the handlebars to catch himself and rolled the throttled hard. It reved so high I thought the thing was going to blow up. I started rethinking the rev limiter after that.

Alcohol and Harleys not a good combination.

Really? Because it's not. It's a 1997 1200 EVO engine. But I am curious...what exactly looks like an 883 to you?

Ref the post I just made a minute ago to your account, I meant the 2000 9-pin.
Thanks again.
