Question 48 Sportster Disable Brake Lights

Hello All,

I have a 2013 48 (US Spec). I have added a tail/brake light under the lip of the fender but am trying to disable the brake lights that are integrated with the turn signals so as to meet UK requirements. I've tried covering up both filaments of the bulb with tape but that hasn't worked. I took a multimeter to the wiring under the seat and found that both the purple and blue wires have voltage when the brake is applied. Does anyone know a way to disable the brake light so only the turn signal will come on? Thanks!

Was the stock taillight integrated with turn signal/brake light function? If not, can you reinstall the stock unit and pass your inspection?

Yeah, stock is a integrated brake/turn signal in the bullet style housing with a red lens cover. The issue is I cant have the red lens cover on because the UK requires amber turn signals.

Unpin the blue wires from the connectors and park in another connector for safe keeping or just cut and tape up (bodge it).

On a UK spec bike that has only indicators for run, brake and turn they are supplied with LED lights with 3 elements such that there is an amber section and a red section.

The 2008 here is a US import and I changed the indicators for UK spec ones, single filament for indicators only. Being a Custom it already has a central tail light also no converter module.

You will probably need to find a way to remove the converter module.

I can see three options for you,

1/ Disconnect the blue wires, if the bulbs give off white light, once the blue wires are gone, you can swap the red lenses for amber ones.

2/ Swap the 1157 rear bulb holders for 1156 holders with 1156 bulbs.

3/ Swap both of the domestic indicators for LED units as below, you will need to install voltage equalisers for the LED lights.

I am wondering about HD OEM lamps for the international market fitted to the 48. It is the 4 wire lamp part number 69406-09. The HDI bike also has harness 68955-08.

There appears nothing in the parts list about needing a load equaliser. Not saying there isn't one there somewhere just it is not popping out looking at a parts list.

Not assuming anything but it would look to be the cleanest setup to convert from domestic to international.
