2008 Sportster 1200: Today while on a ride, the engine began to race, like ~1500-2000rpm with the throttle closed. I shut the engine off and re-started it, but the condition persisted. Later on, the rpms settled down to a reasonable speed. Any ideas? Thank you! (Has anyone installed a Barons Brand Tach on their Custom, and is it difficult to wire?) Thanks again.

Reason: clarity
Idle Air Controller? That would cause a hanging idle. Maybe take it out and clean it. An old GF had a Honda that had a constantly fluctuating idle, after cleaning the IAC, no more problems. Check for any codes afterward?

OP, check you tube. Theres probably tons of videos to walk you through it.
It's perfectly normal for EFI Sportsters to have a fast tick over from a cold start, my 2011 XL883N starts at 2000rpm from cold, after about three minutes it settles down to a regular 1000rpm.
This is the first time I've heard of a Sportster tick over racing when the motor is at working temperature, good luck curing your problem.
