Default Cylinder stud removal

I need to replace the cylinder studs on my motor but am a little nervous about this as I don't want to snap off a stud or screw up any of the threads. I have the stud removal tool but with a 20 year old motor I am assuming this may be a little difficult. I believe Dan at Hammer said these have loctite on them so heat will be required. Anyone done this and have any advice or words of wisdom?

I have not replaced cylinder studs but I am curious why they need replacement?

They stretch over time after the head has been removed a couple times. One of my head bolts won't torque down because the bolt is likely bottoming out on the stud due to it being stretched. When I torque the bolt it undoes itself slightly when pressure is released on the wrench.

It might be that being 20 yrs old the bolt is stuck to the stud. Long shot but who knows.
Just curious why are yo torquing the heads ? Has it been apart ?
What your saying in my mind is a not very likely at all Sir

I changed mine on my shovel during a rebuild. I tried with just a remover, nope, wasn't going to happen. Did penetration oil a few times letting it sit for 24hrs. Next day hit it with my induction heater til cherry, blast of penetrating oil and came right out. Had all 8 out in about 30 minutes.

If you don't have a heater, well worth it! Used mine many times. You can find them cheaper on eBay but all from China with long shipping. Sure, this ones China too, but same day delivery!

It's very likely. I think fueling recommends replacing the studs every time the head is removed because of this. I am reinstalling the heads after the motor has been apart. The theory comes from Dan at Hammer Performance so I think it has merit.

Holy cow. That's pricey. I was just going to use a butane torch as usual. It there a reason not to heat it with a torch?

My brother is a marine diesel mechanic. He may have one of these handy tools.

I think fueling recommends replacing the studs every time the head is removed because of this.
Ive replaced head studs 2 times in the last 25 years. It does happen, but replacing every time the head comes off is ridiculous imho. I would have gone through 100 sets of studs if that was the case. A solution looking for a problem is what that advice is.

I agree. It's a great way to sell $120 stud sets. But it does speak to the fact that occasionally they do need to be replaced.
