Default TRANS FLUID

bought a used 1200 - 2005 and want to check as much as I can before going too far. I want to check the transmisson fluid but don't know how -or where. as much detail as possible is good. (what kind of oil, what amount, where to check, what level should be when checked.....) ordered an owner's manual about 10 days ago and still haven't received it. thanks in advance.

Do yourself a favor and get the shop manual for your scoot. It will pay for itself the first time you do anything to your scoot.

The Sportster utilizes a unitized engine/transmission (the tranny is not a separate box). The primary cover is the best way to check fluid level for the transmission and the process is explained well in the Service Manual as Zimbob suggested you purchase. This manual is truly worth the cost of $60.00 ($48.00 from Chicago Harley, Zanotti's, or Surdykes) even if all you're going to do is maintain your own fluids and oil changes. One fluid change by the dealer and you've more than gotten your cost for the manual back by doing it yourself. STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!

Since you purchased the bike used, you probably don't know for sure what the condition of the oil is or what kind of oil is in the tranny/primary. The tranny/primary takes exactly 1 quart (32oz.). If it were my bike, I would just drain it and refill with 1 quart of whatever oil you decide to use. HD says it "OK" to use 20w50 engine oil in the tranny but I along with many others prefer to use a synthetic Gear Oil instead like Mobil-1 75w-90. Don't worry about the gear oil seeming to be "heavier" than the engine oil, they are measured on 2 different scales and their viscosities are basically the same. If you drain it you can refill it through the primary chain inspection cover. That's much easier than pulling the derby cover.
