Default New Sportster Owner (Handlebar Question)

Hi guys,

I recently purchased my first Harley, a 1997 Sportster 883. I love the bike but as with everyone I want to change things to make it my own. One of the first things I want to change are the handlebars. They pullback a little too much for my taste. I don't know if they are the stock bars or not but I'm looking to replace them and I have a few questions.

I like the height and width of the bars that are on the bike now I just don't want them pulled back so far. I've measured these bars on my bike and from the best I can tell they are 10 inches high with an 11" pull back.

A couple of questions: What height are mini-ape bars? I don't have any other bikes to measure to determine what type of pullback I want but I "think" 5-6 inches would be right. Are mini apes what I'm looking for? Also, I want to wire the bars internally. Is there a write-up/how-to on this somewhere?

Sorry for all of the newbie questions and thanks for any help. I'll try to get some pictures up here so you guys can see what I'm talking about.

Congrats on your first Harley! I believe the mini apes are 10" high with about 5" pullback. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm pretty positive they are 10" high, though. It's the pullback I'm not 100% sure on. I'm not sure where to find information on internal wiring. I've had other places take care of that for me.

My suggestion would be that you go and visit a dealer who has a selection of bars in stock and take a look at the options available. Hold a few different styles and sizesup against your bike to see how they look and feel. That way you'll be in a better position to make the right choice first time.

Ihave the HD mini-apes for Sportsters (part # 56563-95). They are 9" high (the same height as stock bars on the Low models), and have a 5" pullback. It sounds like they might be what you want.

Sounds like you had the same problem I did- too much pullback on the stock bars for my taste. I didn't want to dump a bunch of money into new cables, brake hose, etc. so I found a set of bars at one of the local dealers that had approximately the same width and rise but virtually no pullback. Didn't have to change anything but the bars. Total cost was about $50 and I still have factory HD bars on my bike. (It's the dark-blue bike in the foreground of my signature pic)

My handlebars are called "mini-apes" (as stated on the label that came on them)....but in all reality, they are the standard handlebars for a Dyna Streetbob or a Wide Glide. The rise is 8" tall, and the base is 8" wide. Wiring how-to's can be found in the "do it yourself tech help" forum here in HDForums. Hollar if you need more than what you find.
