Default How hot for how long?

I've been riding my new (to me) bike everyday now for almost a week.
Mostly backroads, mostly 55mph speedlimits and below.

When I park it, the rocker box covers and the transmission tend to stay warm for several hours. Is this normal?

It's a 2005 XL1200C and it is all stock except the Screamin' Eagle II exhaust. I do not know if the previous owner re-jetted or not, but it smells a touch rich. I haven't checked the plugs yet.

Ok... Just pulled the plugs...

The back one is rich (black and sooty) and the front one is well... wierd...

The base of the insulator is black and sooty, but the ground electrode is white...

Guess I'll search for the "reading the plugs" thread.

brown or white is ok, black, melted or covered with oil or gas is not good.
just replace the plugs anyways cause theyre cheap. then ride your bike around pretty hard and then get out and use one of those laser temp guns and temp check each cylinder, if one is way hotter than the other then you have a problem. if they are both around the same temp then thats good.

White is NOT OK, reading plugs is harder than it used to be becasue of all the additives in gas to make it burn cleaner.
Simply put,,, a white electrode is OK, sooth or whatever around the base is no big deal, you will not get a twin cylinder engine with a Carb to have dead equal cylinders,,, either in A/F Ratio nor temperatureand the rear cyclinder on a V Twin is gonna run slightly hotter than the front.
The situation of the engine taking some time to cool down is I would say very normal, I think you are worried about nothing there,

The Clymer Sportster manual has descriptions of 6 or 7 categories your plugs can fall into (based on color/appearance) with a description of what's happening and a remedy. I sure would like to understand this stuff better.

3 hours and still warm to the hand is fairly normal.
