Default Exhaust gaskets

Just wanted some info on what exhaust gaskets u guys recommend, I bought a new exhaust and it calls for the 17048-98 gasket, I have a set of copper rings on hand and I was curious if i could use those instead

I prefer the copper rings but the OEM style works fine as well. I would use what you have.

I was going to try the copper rings the next time I have to pull my exhaust.

Something to note. The OEM style (shown above) are tapered. They also make a flat version (sometimes called race style). You should look to see if your headers are tapered (like stock) or flat. The tapered version will work on both but personally I prefer the flat version if the exhaust has a flat shape. The tapered version tends to loose their shape when crushed blocking part of the exhaust port usually. But, again, I like copper.

Also, l love the James Gasket flange nuts (the ones in the OPs picture in post #1) they cover the entire stud thread and make it easy to see how even the exhaust is tightened down on the head which can be helpful for spotting issues if the gasket doesn't seat right. Since the end of the stud sits flush with the end of the nut it's easy to tell when things are not right.

OEM-type as shown above. I also use those. I "tried" some James gaskets but
no-go.... The James gaskets might've been "ok" for the "older" bikes, but the
HD graphite-impregnated gaskets are the ones to use - IMHO...

I suggest the screamin eagle mesh gaskets or ones like them. Skinny, they don’t spread out like factory ones do.
