Possibly this is what I am thinking of. I may have read one of these from the dealer. 20k miles seems excessive but maybe not. Sounds like a good money making scheme to me.
I have no issue with replacing OEM lifters at 20k, but I don`t plan of changing out the Johnson Hy Lifts I installed in my M8`s for at least 40-50k (stock cams in both machines).
I shudder to think what a dealer would charge for replacing a set of lifters on a TC or M8...

When is the deciding factor to open up the engine to check?
Two machines here are at 50k and 46k.
Not sure if there is any way to really check them effectively. I feel like if you have to take the rocker boxes off for any reason and you are up in the 40 or 50k range I would just replace them. You do not have to remove the heads or open the cam chest or anything so you really don't have to open the engine up. Just remove the pushrods and tubes and fish them out. A new set was only $120 or so from the dealer if I recall, so I feel like it's just cheap insurance.

Sorry to piggyback on the thread, but is some tapping expected from the engine?
Mine(2005 1275 conversion) is not near that loud and only comes from the left side(where the valves are). I just assumed that it how the engine is supposed to sound with valve going up and down that fast. I was concerned by it after I just installed new cylinders and since then I had to take rocker covers and heads off and did not notice any damage or signs of contact around the valves. I put around 1000 miles on the motorcycle since then, did the oil change and everything looks fine.
What could be the source of this tapping noise on a fellow rider's bike?
Thank you.
That's not a tapping sound, that's a hammering noise. That needs to come apart and be looked at before it comes apart on it's own. Motorcycle noises don't "heal."

Totally agree. But what needs to come apart? All of it? Pushrod, tubes and lifters only? Or cylinders and all the way down to the crank? Unfortunately right now he doesn't know what he's trying to fix.
