Hi, my 5K service is here and I want to change the primary/trans fluid. The manual only gives HD part number, not SAE specs. I jotted down this from another forum for later thinking I would come back to it, as it appears to have something that I could learn about smoothing out the tranny shifting...
"Bel-Rey 85W140... Hayden M-6..." What can these procucts do for my 05 1200C, and who has this stuff. Anybody know the type of fluid I need, SAE numbers/type, not HD. thanks Wondering where you got the 75/90 numbers.

For your primary/tranny go with a 75w-90 gear oil like Mobil-1 syn 75w90. Stay away from the "heavier"85w-140 gear oils. They only work in the BT's which have a seperate tranny and primary. You have to be careful when reading some of the other forum topic areas here in that the Sportster primary/tranny is different.
Up until the last few years, HD recommended Sportrans fluid in the Trans/Primary. The Sportrans fluid was a gear oil. Recently (for convenience?) HD has been saying it's "OK" to use 20w50 engine oil in the trans/primary. I'm now reading that HD is backing away from saying that the engine oil is the best fluid choice for the gear box. It kind of makes since, the engine and tranny are 2 different environments. I'll stay with using Gear Oil in the gear box. Just my .02.

I have been debating that myself and do worry about it,I had them do the 1K service and they swapped it to full syn then. The other thing I heard is I shouldn't go back to regular stuff after going to full syn.????

There is no reason to go back to dino "regular stuff". Mobil-1 75w-90 Gear Oil issynthetic. It's $9 and change at AutoZone. Other comparable products are available from Redline, Royal Purple, Amsoil etc.
