Well I just got through sort of changing my fluids for the first time, got the oil no problem and filter no problem used the cut away 1 liter bottle idea I read on here somewhere worked great. Also drained the transmission fluid no problem...the gasket torn so I need to get a new one...the problem I am having is getting the foor rest off so I can refill the transmission, those bolts are on good and starting to chew up so I stopped. Two questions
1: how do you get these bolts off..?
2: is there any other way of filling the transmission other than through the derby cover...?
Bonus question: Do I have to get a gasket from the dealership or would a gasket from walmart or auto place work? the dealership is closed sundays around here which means it would be monday till I can fill it.
You need to get the square gasket from HD, by the way it is quite a bit smaller than the outside rim of the cover so don't be alarmed if it looks too small.
I was able to change my derby cover without removing my mid mount control/foot peg, it's tight but can be done.
Try an impact driver (the kind you hit with a hammer) to remove the bolts, if you don't have one try using a punch inside the head of the bolt with a few good sharp hits with the hammer, that should jarthe boltsenough to be able to remove them. Make sure your using good quality tools or you will screw up the bolt heads.
The "gasket" you need is a simple O ring for the drain plug. Don't remove the Derby cover to refill the oil. Open the pirmary chain insepection cover and put the oil in there. It's just forward of the derby cover and only has 2 screws.
Not only is that the best hole to fill the tranny fluid, but if you don't have the bike on a jack, the tranny will leak fluid with the derby cover removed.
anti seize lube....whats that? Thanks for the advice I much prefer two screws too six, I saw that cover and was thinking maybe I could just fill it but according to the service manual it was never mentioned.
Also lloks like I will be using the wifes turkey baster put the 3 qts in the service manual said and have the tank plum full. After reading a few posts on here come to find 2.5 qt is good
