My sportster does not want to go into neutral. When I can find neutral it grinds and makes a rattling sound when bike is running. If I hold pressure against shifter with toe the vibration stops. When running in neutral and rattling, I turn it off and it jerks forward like it's sort of in gear. I put forward controls on the bike recently. I changed the oil in primary recently. This started after I did the two minor chores. Can anybody tell me where to start? Shifter forks? Clutch? Transmission? When I'm riding it shifts fine with the exception of changing from 2nd to 3rd, where it sometimes takes two stabs at getting it in gear. Any help will be appreciated.

I recently had this problem and found it to be a broken cam follower and bent shifting shaft.
Very minimum you will find this part is toast because if memory serves me right it's made from pot metal and only works well for a few thousand miles from new. The cam plate it rides on isn't machined but stamped and it's rough surface eats the follower in no time! Of course this and most other parts are no longer available from H-D.
On the bright side everything is accessible through the trap door and I'm sure the aftermarket has everything you'll need.
The first time you take that clutch apart you'll realize the clutch pack never fully separates! It always drags no matter how you adjust it. There is a fix that eliminates the spring plate but I don't remember the details.
