I guess my question wasn't one of will it but more of a how well will it? Fine the bike will do 80 then I can keep up with traffice here in Atlanta. Can it get there in a same reasonable time. If I'm on an uphill on ramp am I going to need the emergency lane to get up to speed?
The 883 is a fine ride. It can do whatever you want, and don't let anyone tell you differently. Like harleyxlc said above, it's more an ego thing than anything else. Remember, in 1957 the Sportster, a.k.a., the original Super Bike, made its debut with 883cc's and could whip any Harley Big Twin in town - and Big Twins at the timehad 74" engines(1200cc)!
Actually the '57 Sportster used a 7.5:1compression 900cc Ironhead engine.
The first 883cc engine used in theSportster wasn't until '86 when the Ironhead engines werereplaced by the 883cc and 1100cc EVO engines.
With my 883L, Stage 1 and vance and hines pipes, I run with big twins all the time - Ultra Classics, Fatboys, etc and I'm NEVER left behind. To me, its more nimble than the big twins, jumps right up to well over highway speeds in short order, has a fistfull of torque that never leaves me bored, and fits the budget.
I'll likely add a Road King to the stable in time, but I can't see parting with my 883 - to me, it's classic Harley.
883 here with a 290 pounder in the saddle and I can get to 60 faster than most cars can.... maybe 90% of them....sure I would like the other 300cc but if you are on a budget like I was then the 883 is just fine and I think maybe is a better choice for me...no regrets here at all
I weigh in at 215 and 6'-2'. My 02 883 is plenty fast. Look at it like this, Biking is about freedom... right? I bought the only model I could pay for outright.
A sporty offers a helluva lot of fun and gives me peace of mind that I am not financing 20+k to be on the road.
get the 883 and do the 1200 or 1250 conversion (or 88ci or 90ci) over the winter when dealers ussually have dropped prices on labor and have other specials and will do the whole thing, that is if you live in a place cant ride for 3-4 months because of snow. But the 883 is enough for a month or 2 until you want something more
