Yes, HD say's it's "OK" to put 20w-50 engine oil in the primary/tranny, but why would anyone want to do that? I use Mobil 1 75w-90 Gear oil instead. That's the environment it's made for. No, the gear oil is not really "heavier", it's about the same viscosity as the engine oil, it just has different additives than the engine oil does due to the different application.

Yes, cHarley uses syn gear oil.. Sorry to the answer for ya man, didn't figure you'd mind. You can also use the Mobil-1 V twin 20w-50. I did for 20,000 miles. I recently switched to the gear oil cHarley speaks of. I don't know crap about all of that molecular structure of oil......my eyes just glaze over when people start talking about that stuff.
