In spite of the balmy weather in NY I know cool weather is on the way. I never had a windscreen on a bike aside from cafe style fairing units. But I think me and my sportie (1989) might like one for the cool weather. What gives with these screens?....should I plan on looking thru it or over it? Should the mount be on the forks or handlebars? Tinted or clear? Any advice, links, stickysand tips would be appreciated.....thanx all.
I usually look through the top 1" of mine. You'll love the fact that the bugs won't matter anymore. except when it comes time to clean the darn thing. I suggest the fork mounts, more stable, and get the removable one. if you go down, you might be glad you did. I've seen permenet oned cut riders open.
Fork mounts provide a better and much stronger mount. A Q/D (quick disconnect) fork mount allows fo easy on, easy off mounting as weather dictates. The correct height fora full windshield would put the top of the windshield somewhere between your mouth and the tip of your nose. At that height the shield should still deflect the wind and rain etc.over the top of your head and your view is not impared by looking through the shield or the line created by the to edge of the shield.
It just so happens that if I slouch I look thru my quick detach windshield. If I stiffen up my back a little I look over the top. By coincidence it works out just fine for me.
Mineis the standard height and clear. I'm 5'10" if that helps.
Mine is HD Quick Disconnect (clamps to the forks, leaves nothing behind) clear screen - I do not know what standard height is, mine is 20" above top of head lamp. The prev owner (5'9") liked looking through the screen. I am 6'4" and like looking over the screen. I amseeing the road 35'+over the screen and under 35' through the screen. Works great for me. I am comuting 55 miles (mostly freeway 65-75mph) I would not make the trip without the windscreen.
I do like the looks of the Sportty better without though, so the QD works best for me. 5 sec job
First off, whoever said they look through the windshield is using it wrong. You should never look through your windshield while riding unless you're looking directly in front of the bike. Your cruising "stare," if you will, should put your eyes above the shield completely. That is, unless you're really short...
I have the newly released Quick-Detachable Touring windshield for the Sportster. It's the widest, tallest detachable shield out for the Sportster (from HD, that is). It leaves zero parts behind when you take it off, and it works like a charm. I would suggest a quick-detachable windshield in clear. If you get smoked it makes it harder to see critters at night. And in reality, you're looking above the shield anyway, so what good does smoked do? Nothing.
Cleaning the windshield isn't so bad. I just soak a t-shirt and lay it on the windshield. One single wipe and the bugs are all gone. Then I dry it with a soft dry towel so it doesn't leave water spots.
I think the HD sport winshield for the sporty is great ,we have had them on both our sporties.you look over it and it blocks a good deal of wind, easy to put on. If you want a little more style , try Memphis Shades.
In cold weather, long trips, windy days, freeways, commuter use a full size fork mounted windshield is best. The HD quick detachable is a good choice. If price is an issue, fork mounted with hardware left behind can be had fairly cheap on Ebay. A handlebar mounted sport windshield is fine for occasional use, but doesn't provide as much protection. For around $50 a Slipstreamer Spitfire is fine for a handlebar mounted lite duty windshield. Clear is best. Smoked windshields may look good, but cut down your vision in the shade or at night.

I don't mean to start a war here, but,if a rider likes looking through their windshield, so be it. who cares. I just look through mine becauseI have bad ridng posture, I slouch, and I'm too lazy to trim the darn thing. Besides,I like to look through it. The only problemI have with looking thorugh mine is the glare when riding into the sun. In that case,I sit up and look over it,problem solved.
