Default MPG

While going to Albuquerque a few days ago, I had a chance to play with various speeds on my 2006 883L and see what effect this had on the gas mileage.

At 60 mph - I get 59 mpg
At 70 mph - I get 50 mpg
At 80 mph - I get 38 mpg

Believe it or not - wind is not much of a factor in the mpg marks. I didn't expect such a big drop off on mpg @80 mph tho. It must have something to do with the engine rpms at that speed. I need to get a tach on this machine - so right now I am just guessing. Looking at my book - I see that the gear ratios are different between the 883s and the 1200s (at least for 2006 they are) - the 883 engine is turning faster at the same speeds ..... So what effect will upgrading the engine have if I leave the transmission alone? I expect it will make my machine faster off of the line than a stock 1200 - but I will lose at the top end, and have a worse overall mpg ... So what do you guys with 1200's get (mpg) on the road?

In all honestly I get the pretty much the same mpg's that you do at those speeds with my 05 xl1200c. The only change I would make is that at 60mph i get worse of 55mpg and at 80 mph I get slighly better of like 42 mpg.

will have to wait for the snow metl to get back to you on this one, I only have 270 miles on my 06 - cant judge by me and my 05 since something was wrong and I never did better than 25mpg at any speed - that bike is no longer my concern.

i have a 92 883 deluxe that i kitted to 1200, left the gearing the same, and its fast as hell! my milage is actually a little better than it was, maybe because i am not as deep in the throttle as before.

I have a 2005 XL1200R and other than Cycle Shack Tapered slip-ons, it is stock at the moment. In the 50-60 mph range I average 56 mpg. Speeds of 65-70 mph eat into that by about 10 mpg.

Last really close check I did on my 06 XL1200C was 48mpg 2 up on the interstate running 70 - 75 average for 125 miles. Combined weight about 275 lbs me + my daughter. Bike is Stage 1 rejetted, SE AC, SE II slip ons.

ok:shift4low is traveling along @ 50-60 mph on his harley. His harley gets exactly 56 mpg at that speed (for math problem). If sift4low starts out with a full tank and goes at a constant speed till empty, how far should he go (show your work for full credit)

56mpg *4.5gal = 252 miles - [8D] - jest kiddin round bud

Shift_4lo,

I've never run a full tank dry at the 50-60 mph speed so I can't tell you what the trip distance would be on a 3.3 gallon tank, but your math is correct using the 0.8 gallon reserve.
