HDHORNET, you have a very nice looking bike. Looks like you have done some very nice mods there and looks like it is nice an broke-in to your comfort level of riding. My bike is about 5 months old and I still dont feel totally comforable on it yet but I am getting there and its a lot closer then when I bought it. Sometimes it can take years depending on how many miles you put on it.
Thanks for the compliment, now I'm just doing girly mods like a detachable backrest that is in the mail and a windshield. When I say girly mods I mean they are for my girlfriend to ease her comfort level when we ride two up, lol. As long as they are detachable I'm happy. Thanks again!
Roger that HDH,my wife got me to change out the seat, add the backrest and change out the pass-foot pegs. I think I would have given the Nightster a more serious thoughtif she had no interest in riding 2up.
There's been a Service Bulletin issued by the Motor Company for the clamps on Quick-Detach windshieldsproduced during specific dates. Up to around July '07 or so. Check with your parts person for specifics. If you've had a clamp break, it may be covered. I've seen two in about 6 months.
P.S. I like all the wind all the time. I tried a windshield for about two weeks in January a bunch of years ago and hated it. Not trying to bash, just givin' a heads up.

I got the HD14688-97 at a swap meet during the summer. I put it on and the clutch cable kept gettingclipping theinside the shield plus the cable at the bend was getting chewed by the lower portion of the bracket.
Then I heard that clutch cable would have to be moved. The dealership offered to install the shield for $140 but I said "yeah, right" and walked away.
Hey HarleyScuba, thanks for the heads up on the recall...I will check that out. Ok on liking the wind, I understand what you are saying I am the same way when the temps are warmer but I live in Oregon and we only see temps over 80 for2-3 months a year.
Skull, the dealer said the same to me about install Ithought the same thing you did (BS to that). I took it home and read the instructions that said I had to relocate both my clutch and throttle cables. However, I didnt do either and installed it without moving them and the only cables that come close to the WS are the throttle cables but the WS has a foam rubber protector where the throttle cables touch it and so I am fine.
If a cable rubs on the wind shield, you can cut a small piece of appropriate size clear hose length-wise and slip it over the cable at the rub. Be sure to cut a length long enough so when you turn the handlebar the cable is still protected. A little ghetto, but it doesn't look too hideous. I used clear on the OL's braided stainless. Black may be preferred for stock cables.

I just bought a quick detach clamp type windshield on 11-28-07 and wonder if I should contact the MoCo dealership to see if the one that I bought is under the service bulletin or not. Any way to tell by numbers?? if it's one of the possible candidates?
Quoted from the Service Bulletin, "The number 49 is stamped on all clamps and is not a defect."
The bulletin is dated July 23, 2007. The "Detail Part Number" in the bulletin (not your windshield part #) is 58740-05. Your service dept. can search on H-DNet for "Service Bulletin Windshield". The service bulletin has pictures (complete with circles and arrows, Mr. Guthry) that depict the clamps involved. It'd be next to impossible to describe in words the criteria for a clamp that's covered. It's not a recall. What the bulletin does is announce the extension of the over-the-counter warranty (ie. not installed by the dealer before delivery of the bike, which would make the warranty 2 years automatically) for one year from the issue of this bulletin (July 23, '08).
Your Harley parts-counter person orParts Manager should have the bulletin (perhaps the service dept). They won't be able tomake a warranty claim unless it's broken - but who's to say when or how it broke (wink wink, nudge nudge). Just be sure your clampis covered by the bulletin and it's broken in the "correct"locationwhen it "suddenly" snaps in two. I haven't encountered alot of these. I remember two in the past 10 months. One in June and one in August. Both were within about 30 days of buyingtheir windshield. One was a Softail and one was a Sportster. If you take your windshield on and off fairly frequently and you've had it for more than 6 months, most likely there's nothing to be concerned about.
I've got one of these windshields I've never used but I'm not freaked out about the failures. I just want people to be aware, and maybe this info will help.
