WHY??
I don't think they are the #1 selling Harley, actually. I believe it's the Street Glide now
But most of the guys that I know that are required to put a lot of miles on their bikes, riding state to state to attend various sanctioned functions, prefer the larger big twins whenputting ina lot of hard miles.

Do people just buy the Sportster and let it sit in the garage?
If you want to see all the Sportsters that are sold, ya gotta start looking in garages, not on the road. Speaking of which, it's time to get mine back outta the garage. I've got a full day of riding planned. [sm=biker2.gif]
Sure, I'd like to be one of those guys with a Harley that is so-decked out that it should be sitting in a motorcycle museum on display somewhere... but I ride what I ride and marvel at what I see other's are riding and tell myself "someday I'll have something like what that guy is riding."
At dozens ofbiker parties, I've sat back at a distance and watched riders (riders of Fatboys, shovelheads,Roadsters, customs, etc.)stand around a look over my bike for several minutes... I get up and slowly walk to the bike while they are there and unzip my tank bag to get something out and say "hello" to them. They always say "nice bike, what year?" I answer back "it's the 07 with the Evolution engine." Then a reply of "cool" or "sharp bike" is a common reply... then I say "yeah, I turned 42 this year and felt like getting a bike so I chose thisSportster for my very first bike." Then they usually say "great choice", "nice" or "cool."
As you've read in this HD forum, a majority of HD riders have started with the Sportster and then graduated to bigger models. They say the Sportster is the hardest bike to ride because it's top-heavy which makes it harder to control. And if you can ride a Sportster, the rest of the HDbike line will seem extremely be easy to ride.
I learned in my MSF course that you should ride what you feel safest on so you are controlling the bike instead of it controlling you... otherwise youcould end up in the obits.
Riders don't dis' other peoples rides... even if they have to lie when saying "cool" and "awesome" when looking at the bike.
Relax, you've got a Harley. Feel the greatness of it when you are at a stop sign. Look around at the guys in the cars when you realize that they are looking at your bike and they are wishing that they were you or the women in the cars looking and wishing they were riding on the bike with you... I see this everyday, especially when I fly by the bus stops. I see the heads turn my way when I'm coming towards them about a 1/2 mile away, and then they are usually smiling at me as I go by.
It's great.
