I think it's smart to have a spare key even though I have never lost one for anything I've owned (won't happen till I have only one key for something). I bought my '97 XL 1200 C used and they only had one key. I went to the best locksmith in the area (could key anything) and he said he didn't have the blank for my key. Do I go to my dealer with my VIN ? Do they have keys for every bike they make? Does it cost a fortune?
Thanks
Just call another locksmith. I've had copies made a couple of times and they had the blanks. The dealer doesn't copy keys, they order originals and it will cost you $$$. I keep a spare in my wallet as well as one at home.
I always carry my regular key ring with all necessary keys like home, work, shed, bike lock, extra bike key, etc., then I carry another "little" key ring with house, bike and lock key only. Never lost one either.
Your dealer will order you a spare (blank) key but they will also tell you that they are required to order two blanks at a "pop" and you will have to buy both! The flat style key is $7.00 but your will have to buy both so 2x7.00= $14.00.... The round key may be a different issue..
I found and bought my spare key blanks on ebay for a fraction of the cost!..
yeah I would get a spare made....its always the 1st time for anything.....I got one made at a bike rally for 5 bux this fall....cheap Insurance I figure.
i got my big keyring that has my 4 housekeys, laundry room key, car keys, and others, that stays in my pocket. then i got a small keyring that holds my sportster key and the key to the lock on my forks
i got a spare at my place, came with my bike when i got it from a friend

Same. I don't want my car keys, house keys, and dorm keys flapping in the breeze on the highway.
