Okay, sideshots are a one piece deal, both pipes are permanently connected together... and I'm having trouble getting them to go onto my 1200N. Anybody that's installed sideshots know of a trick? Front end first, back end first, angle it a certain way? I'm surprised I haven't seen this mentioned before, it's really stumping me, and I really don't want to scrape any more paint off of my engine while trying.
I don't have much advice to offer but I sure as hell hope you post pics when you're done. I've been wanting 'real world' pics of those pipes on a Nighster for a long time.
Well, I finally muscled them around the engine, but they still don't want to cooperate. Apparently this is a frequent problem. I'm taking some time off from them, and I'll try again tomorrow. But yes, if/when I get them on there, there WILL be pics.
I like mine although I don't think they sound as nice with the stock baffles as the cycle shacks I had before them. Style-wise I think they are head and shoulders above anything else for the sportster, but I'm probably prejudiced to a degree
As far as installation goes I heard others and experienced the same PIA when I put mine on. But I also learned in the process. I think when they weld what passes for a crossover in these pipes they "draw" somewhat with the net effect of pulling the header pipes too close together to mate up properly with the exhaust outlets in the heads. If you do a test fit sans flanges and circlips and find that they don't line up properly then carefully adjust them with a rubber mallet until they do. When the headpipes line up well with the ports then put the flanges and circlips on and the pipes will literally fall into place. Knowing what I know now, I could install a set of these in 1/4 of the time and a lot less cussin' and wrench-throwin' and general frustration.
And don't forget the new exhaust gaskets when you change pipes and torque the stud nuts properly- HTH...
Try the test fit with out the flanges to see how much the need to be adjusted
It took me three hours, lots of cussing and finding a friend to help stretch the pipes around the engine to get them on. It was worth it. MJ... I know I promised pics and I just got a new camera, soon...
